I wanted to like the first Fullmetal Alchemist pretty badly. The anime is great, and offers a cool mix of humor, action, and magic that you can't really find anywhere else. Unfortunately, the videogame version wasn't so lucky. Plagued with some rather repetitive gameplay and a short lifespan, it didn't hold up to other games in the genre. The E3 build of Fullmetal Alchemist 2: Curse of the Crimson Elixir, however, looks like it's going to fix a lot of the problems associated with the first one. And if the final game is as fun as the demo, then the developers at Racjin may be on to something.

Fullmetal Alchemist may still be a few weeks off from its American debut, but the series is at the height of its popularity in Japan. The cartoon is about to end, a movie is in production and, just last week, Square Enix released Fullmetal Alchemist 2 (known, formally, as Hagane no Renkin Jutsushi 2: Akaki Elixer no Akuma in Japan), the sequel to the PlayStation 2 debut title from late last year. We picked up the import and played through a few hours.

(Also known as "Fullmetal Alchemist 2: Akaki Elixir no Akuma") The story begins in Lior, a desert city that Edward and Alphonse visit in the first episode of the animated series. As the brothers are unveiling the secrets of a cult called Leto, they are attacked by shadowy creatures from the unknown. Meanwhile, a frightening phenomenon is sweeping the country; people in many regions are vanishing without a trace. In Resembool, Edward and Alphonse meet an enigmatic alchemist. It seems that he has some connection with both the disappearances and the strange creatures encountered earlier. When Colonel Mustang sends the brothers to investigate a village plagued by these monsters, they meet Arlen, an archaeologist who is studying the ancient civilization of Lebis. Edward and Alphonse soon find themselves headed for the ruins of Siam-Sid, the capital city of Lebis, to discover the truth behind the monstrous creatures and the puzzling disappearances.
